It’s become increasingly common knowledge that students in the U.S. are behind their international peers in science, technology, engineering, and math. In this session, we’ll discuss the important work of improving STEM education in our country. Participants will discuss why STEM is a priority for us to address as a nation, what their organization has been doing in the world of STEM education, and their aspirational vision of STEM education in the United States.

Paul Chernick

Paul Chernick, Senior Managing Director of Business Analysis, Teach For America

Paul Chernick is the Senior Managing Director of Business Analysis at Teach For America, where he has been a staff member for nearly eight years. He is a Teach For America alumnus as well, and taught third grade in New York City.


Melissa Moritz

Melissa Moritz, Vice President, Education Initiatives at Teach For America, Teach For America

Melissa Moritz is the Vice President of STEM and Education Initiatives at Teach For America, where she oversees Teach For America’s national STEM Initiative. After graduating from MIT with a B.S. in biology, Melissa joined the Teach For America corps as a middle school science teacher at MS 321 in New York City. In 2008, she joined Teach For America’s staff as the Recruitment Director for MIT and other Boston-area schools. Melissa was recently named of the “100 Women Leaders in STEM” by STEMConnector. She believes passionately that all children should have the opportunity to experience the wonder of math and science. She resides in Washington, DC with her husband.


Rosemarie Truglio

Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, Senior Vice President of Curriculum and Content, Sesame Workshop

Dr. Truglio is responsible for the development of the interdisciplinary curriculum on which Sesame Street is based, and oversees all educational research pertaining to the development of Sesame Street content.


Jason Waite, Vice President, Impact Design, City Year

Jason leads program design efforts for City Year’s Whole School Whole Child model, implemented in over 240 elementary, middle and high schools. Teams of City Year AmeriCorps members partner with school leaders, teachers and other community partners to keep students in school and on track to graduation. He is also a proud City Year AmeriCorps alumnus.
