Giving Tuesday is Coming: Get Ready, Europe

By: Laura McGrath, EMEA Nonprofit Industry Solution Director, Salesforce.org
We’re excited to announce our partnership and support of the growing Giving Tuesday movement in Europe.
Giving Tuesday is no stranger to our friends in the US where it was originally launched in 2012 and has since become the biggest giving day of the year. It’s a movement created as a response to the commercialisation and consumerism on the lead up to the holiday season – and a chance for people to give back in the season of goodwill.
At Salesforce.org, we’re partnering with Giving Tuesday in the UK, Netherlands, France and Spain in order to support the growing movement on this side of the Atlantic. The movement already has an enormous audience worldwide, last year alone, Giving Tuesday was held in more than 150 countries across the Globe and raised upwards of €350 million for the nonprofit sector.
So, when is it exactly?
Giving Tuesday has inspired a global day of giving, and this year it falls on December 3rd. A day where everyone, everywhere can do something to support the causes they care about. It is a day to celebrate and encourage giving in all its forms. People and businesses get involved by volunteering time, donating money, sharing skills or organising a community event such as a street or beach clean up. The list really is endless.
The day also offers an opportunity for nonprofits to tap into the generosity of social media users with the Giving Tuesday hashtags reaching up to 14.2 billion social media impressions! A great way to inspire and encourage new donors to support your cause, reignite passion from your existing donors or invite people to take their first step to join a new movement or campaign.
What’s happening?
Giving Tuesday encourages people to give back to their favourite cause and share their experiences using the hashtag #GivingTuesday – which varies depending on where you are based in Europe. Just like any End of Year campaign, nonprofits really need to plan ahead if they want to get involved.
Having a specific Giving Tuesday ask or campaign will help you stand out – a single tweet or post on the day amongst millions is probably not going to yield the best results. Read how Tiny Tickers smashed their fundraising target six-fold on Giving Tuesday.
